Foi formada em 2001 em San Diego, Califórnia. Logo após sua formação, a banda assinou com a gravadora Pluto e liberou seu primeiro álbum, "Beneath the Encasing of Ashes" em junho de 2001.
Em 2002, a banda gravou as músicas adicionais para o cd Split "As I Lay Dying/American Tragedy", lançado também pela Pluto. Depois de terem aumentado a popularidade, a banda assinou contrato com a Metal Blade Records em 2003.
Em julho 2003, lançaram o segundo álbum full-length da banda, "Frail Words Collapse", sua turnê foi com bandas como: Himsa, Shadows Fall, The Black Dahlia Murder, By Nightfall, entre outras. Em junho 2005, a banda lançou seu terceiro álbum "Shadows are Security", com ele conseguiram a participação no segundo palco do Ozzfest 2005.
Em maio 2006 ambos os cds: "Beneath the Encasing of Ashes" (gravado dois meses depois que a banda entrou na Pluto) e o split "As I Lay Dying/American Tragedy", foram regravados e re-lançados em um CD. O álbum contém as músicas originais e as re-gravações do split e do EP.
Em 2009 fizeram seus primeiros shows no Brasil, nas cidades de Curitiba e São Paulo, alem de tocarem também na Argentina,Chile e Colômbia, como sequëncia da turne "South American Tour 2009".
Atualmente a banda As I Lay Dying, tem o reconhecimento no estilo (metalcore), e é considerada uma das melhores bandas do gênero, e vem fazendo tour com grandes bandas, como: Bullet for My Valentine, Hatebreed, Lamb of God entre outras.
A banda é formada por cristãos, as letras demonstram de maneira culta, as batalhas, os problemas e suas perspectivas como cristãos, porém, segundo Tim Lambesis(vocalista), nem todas as letras se encaixam plenamente dentro do contexto da sua crença no cristianismo, pois também estão relacionadas à experiências pessoais.
